There is a debate on what to use, lossy or lossless. That depends on the music you want to rip.

EditSteps

  1. 1
Consider storage space. Uncompressed songs will we over 50 MB but compressed ones take up far less.
  2. 2
Also consider the level of compression. Using a compression such as Ogg Vorbis can greatly reduce the size of music at little cost to quality. In fact, if you didn't know that it was compressed, you wouldn't notice a difference.
  3. 3
Think about the types of compression. Different ones have been developed for different types of audio.
  4. 4
Consider the placebo factor. If you think that the music is going to be of a lower quality when it is compressed, it will sound worse than it really does. Get this thought out of your mind.

EditTips

  • There is no reason not to compress music. Just don't use extreme compressions, they cause considerable loss of quality.
  • Some compressions work by simply filtering away the sounds the human ear cannot detect anyway, so you may not even notice a difference.

EditWarnings

  • Extreme compressions are dangerous to your music. They will make it sound "tin-can like" and fake.
  • Some Sony Cd's contain a Root kit that installs itself when you insert the CD. This does not exist on new Cd's from them however.
