I saw your note to the wikiHow Intern, and I did a little formatting to address what I think the concerns were - I just did some tweaks to make each step an action for the reader to take, per our formatting guidelines. I also restored the previous images, since the new ones didn't seem to add much to the article. You can see the changes here. I hope they're helpful!
I was also wondering whether there might be a title we could change it to that would pinpoint the topic more -- something to connect it to the calculus/Excel part of the method, rather than a general topic on how to maximize revenue for general businesspeople, for example. Maybe How to Find the Prices that Maximizes Revenue Using Calculus in Excel? I'm not familiar with the topic though, so there's probably a better wording. What do you think?
At 17:53, Jul 31, 2014
Anna said:
No prob, glad it was helpful! I guess with the title my concern is just that someone searching for that title might be looking for a general guide on setting prices and maximizing revenue, not one so routed in a particular mathematical/Excel approach. Does the approach go by any other specific name that would clarify that for them?

You grok rhymes with "You rock" so maybe it was a take off from that term (my junior yr in high school was '61-'62 -- I'm "old-school" lol). I never heard of it, but I was not a scifi officianado (I read a few Ray Bradbury short stories and liked the Star Wars movies & the Star Trek in the late 1960s and X-files on TV, other stuff., but I have little/or no scifi jargon (I guess "grok is as grok does"). Some people use lots of scifi vocabulary, but I never thought of adopting scifi terms into my daily life (that's just me, not groovy).

I did a search on WikiHow articles and found no one has done an article on it so I will have to get my study books out and do some revision before putting together a piece on it as it is rather complex (you would like that)! I may have to search through my external hard drive to find images I took to demonstrate the technique, fingers crossed I still have them or I will have to get outside and take some more shots! If you have special dispensation to use personal references in your articles, please accept my apologies for interfering and roll back all my edits to restore your article to the way it was. If you are unable to use the Roll Back function, I can do this for you. Hey Chris,
I see you have had a bit of a tussle over the relateds and wanted to let you know that an acceptable format is Article Name which renders the same as How to Article Name. The only reason that the newly created format is not more widely used or known is that the most prolific wikiHow patroller and Hall-of-Famer, BR/Bobbyfrank, did not like that format and consistently changed it to the old standard. (I never asked him why, but Bob usually has a valid reason underlying his actions.)

Chris,
I saw your question to Krystle about the possibility of selecting the picture that appears in the relateds image. I believe the that there are no selection options; it is the last image in your article. Check and see if that is not so. In your articles, you often start with the finished result. Why don't you repeat that in the last step. There is nothing that says you cannot.
You will also notice that the more words in your title, the more obscured the image is. Thus it pays to put some thought into distilling the title to the most concise, yet true-to-the-article title.
I am sure Krystle will be along shortly to let you know her answer to your question. There may, indeed, be a way to over-ride the last image showing in the relateds, which, by the way, is the same image that shows on the main page when your article is featured or given an RS (rising star).
If there is an over-ride, would you be kind enough to share that knowledge with me?

"Is there a way for me to determine which picture shows up in the Related wikiHow boxes of other artiles? I'm pretty disappointed with some of the selections ..."
I think it's usually whatever the last pictures is in the steps. If there are no pictures in the steps, by default the master category picture is used, which isn't always a good fit.

Hey Chris!
I did the three title changes - one you left in your message to me and two that Bob passed on.
Yep, you can see everywhere that an article is linked by going to the article page, hovering over the "Edit" box in the drop-down menu, and clicking on "What Links Here" -- for example, http://www.wikihow.com/Special:WhatLinksHere/Arrive-at-%E2%80%901-and-1-from-Spaces-or-Zeroes -- that should show places where it's in the Relateds :)
For the userpage, I added sections with the === Three Equals Signs Headers === - is that what you mean? Formatting/wikitext is generally similar on user pages to on article pages. Check out How to Make a wikiHow User Page but let me know if you have more questions :)

I'm sorry to hear that - it sounds super frustrating! I did see a redirect happen to me once, but it sounds like it's happening a lot more to you. I'm trying to keep track of what pages I'm on and what links I click in order to put together a bug report, but to do that we need to show the engineers how to reproduce it (ie how to make it happen). So, I'll keep trying to figure out the puzzle, but if you get any insight on what kinds of links work that way, let me know. Thanks Chris!

Hi, Chris. I edit on two platforms here, the Spellchecker tool and the Copyedit tool. I believe I've encountered your articles on Spellchecker. With Copyedit, I do try to understand what the author is saying. On Spellchecker, however, I blow through those articles (which are selected by the tool, not me) pretty fast and sometimes hardly know what the article is about (I'm not really reading the articles. The tool itself highlights certain words it suspects are misspelled and asks the editor to fix the spelling when appropriate.) So thanks for the compliments, but they're really not deserved. I just happen to be a good speller and can plow through a lot of verbiage quickly. We all do what we can. Take care.

Hey Chris,
Reuben and I spent yesterday afternoon and evening working on the home page redirect issue. I've seen it once or twice too - not as often as you but I have seen it! So he's trying to get to the bottom of it. It's just very difficult when you can't pin down the situations it's happening in (links are behaving differently for different users, so the ones that redirect for you are fine for me, and vice versa). Sorry for the frustration in the meantime, but rest assured that he is working on it, highest priority!
I'm not sure what you mean by from http to something more legible? You can use Chris-Garthwaite to make Chris Garthwaite - is that it? Or Chris Garthwaite to make Chris Garthwaite works, too.
I don't know if it's possible to embed videos into a user page - we have the video adding tool for embeds in articles, but I've never seen it done on a user page. Maybe you can ask in the forums?

No worries, Chris - sorry for the hassle in the meantime! It's not only you, so I don't think it's related to your password in this case. As long as the URL in your browser bar is wikiHow itself as you change your password, you're generally okay :)

I just wanted to clarify that I don't disagree that Excel has been very therapeutic for you! I completely believe that it has...your passion for it is obvious :)
I'm just pointing out that what may be a strong link for you, may not be a strong link for others. Excel has been therapeutic for you, but this connection might not exist for many others with schizophrenia. For example: I find hiking to be extremely therapeutic, it makes me very happy. But, I would not post 5 articles about hiking as related wikiHows for How to Be Happy. Hiking makes ME happy but I understand it may not have the same effect on others. Everyone must find their own therapy, I think, and I don't believe in imposing that on others. I understand that you're just trying to help, though! I just wanted to explain that I believe you and agree with you, and point out that I don't want to assume others will have your same experience, because everyone's experience is their own, and their journey may lead them to another thing that gives them therapy.

Interesting -- so what happens if you click on User:XhohX? Do you get to the main page? This sounds maybe like a bit of a different problem from the other one, but let's see if we can figure it out... Can you send me a screencast of what happens? That'd help dig into it.
I know you're not a fan of clearing your cache, but it may be that you need to "reset" your browser's wikiHow experience to get things squeaky clean again, if it is still the same problem. Have you closed out your entire browser and reopened, too? That might be a good intermediary step.
I'll pass your thanks onto Reuben! His username is User:Reuben, too if you want to reach him. He's stuck into some other fixes at the moment, though, so if you want to do more troubleshooting on the problems you're still having, let's tackle that together, rather than going through him. Cheers, Chris!

I saw where you created sections in Create the Bishop Image in Microsoft Excel and added the "magic word," __Parts__, so that the section headings show Parts (sequential divisions of a larger process) rather than the default Methods (independent ways to do the task). I found out a bit more about that screenshot. Leah got that from Explore➙Special Pages➙Your Articles (Last link in the last section entitled "Other special pages"). You can access that here, but it will not render on your user page (and that is what I think you are after).
Still, in a spreadsheet you might be able to make use of a call to Explore➙Special Pages➙Article Stats which is formed as: . I am not sure what data is conveyed and in what format, but you might find a way to use it in your spreadsheet which tracks views and, thus, integrate articles (beyond 100) from a single user page.

Thanks for your edits on User_talk:Byankno1. Thanks for all those "gifts". I hope my profile inspired some inspirational thoughts for something you began for the site.
A slight did you know however: You can add the image wikicode to the message itself. Otherwise it breaks the formatting and really destroys the page. I however, fixed how the image placement on my Talk page should have been added. (Next time, for messages, create and publish your message. Then upload the image and add the image inside the last message you left.)

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the note! Unfortunately, in general we don't delete articles that have such a long and established history unless they go through an NFD process and there's a reason for deletion per the Deletion Policy. If it were new, I could remove it for you, but that article has over a year of edits on it, so I think we've passed the mark of no return on that one. Otherwise, the history of edits and contributions would be lost by the deletion. Sorry :/

There really isn't Amy one article on that per see. But of you utilize sort of weekday I told you in the past, you can eliminate formation issues. I'll restate the solution when I get home from work at about 11:45PM EST. I'll get too this, so don't worry. You can later permalink the message I send you on, if you have one, the Mylinks page.
At 05:37, Jan 24, 2015
Chris said:
The message you are probably waiting so patiently for: (I'm sorry these steps don't start with the action verb; my bad). When you need to add an image to a talk page message, you need to do this in two parts.
- As you probably know, submit the message without the image (since you don't have a button to click to add images).
- After the message has been submitted, click the Edit button to the person's talk page.
- Find the message you just sent, which should be at the bottom of the editor. Click into where the end of the message is and just before the {{comment_footer area begins.
- Insert a carriage return in between these two things (message and the comment footer template) - Break apart these two
- Bring your cursor to the next line containing no text (should have been created with the carriage return.
- Insert the picture manually with the Advanced Editor rules, based on the information for the Advanced editor contained within the same rules as Put a Photo in a wikiHow Article.
- License the photo, if you are uploading a new photo and perform the same photo uploading as you would have for an article with photos.
- Type something like "Added image to my message" to the edit summary box.
- Preview (if you'd like to see the updated message with the photo included).
- Post the updated message with the image intact, using the same rules as any Advanced Editor edit.
So, no, what you were doing to test in your edits after I started to mention at 2PM were still wrong, but were definitely fixable. I didn't add anything. I plainly moved stuff around; that's all! To clarify who left the image and who's responsible for the image, it's best to add it to you own message.
Its a fixable mistake (just like any other edit on a wiki), but is harder to figure out, unless the person is watching things happen second-by-second/edit-by-edit.

Hi Chris (from one Chris to another),
Right on! That's the way to do it!
The MyLinks siderail, after creating it, is found on the right hand side of all the pages when you browse around on wikiHow. We have a guide on setting one up(If you'd like to remove it later, you can just remove the links from the bar and the bar will vanish). (Create My Links on wikiHow is the way to go about creating a siderail that can keep some links to articles and pages. If you'd like to see a sample, take a look at mine. Please note that the links from the "NAB" and "NAB Trigger tools" sections (that I created myself) won't work on your account. http://www.wikihow.com/User:Byankno1/Mylinks

I like to keep tables, but not that much that I have the time to create works from spreadsheets. Call me techie, but creating patterns like that, just isn't me! There's just no other way to put it.
Thanks for the advice, I bet someone out there will have a need some day, but so far, I can't benefit from much of your advice you are publishing. It really inspires me to think further about my own. I am not a math brain at all, so even dipping my toe into some of your articles seem too much at times. But you're right, the images you create are stunning. They really do help bridge the gap between the precision of math and the creativity of art. Thanks for letting me know where the problem in that article was!

Hah, well understandable! Since patrolling is so vital for quality control, don't hesitate to hit "skip" when you're not sure, though, and to reach out with any questions - always happy to shed light on what's happening with the edits you see, or what needs to be done there. But as long as you skip edits you're not absolutely certain about, no harm no foul :)

Most people get there from plain ol' search, I think, but with a "not yet approved" article, it's more likely to be wikiHow editors coming across it in RCP or other editing :)

Great question. Content from Wikipedia is actually shared under a different license from the one here, and unfortunately they aren't compatible. So while you can't take content from there word for word and republish it here, you can make wording changes/summarizations/etc and site the source; that's a-okay. Check out How to Reference Sources on wikiHow for more on that!

Can you give me an example of how you are quoting Wikipedia?

Krystle said:
Ahh ok. Unless you're sure you're paraphrasing, it might be good to include Wikipedia as a reference :) But your call, ultimately!

Thanks anyway for clearing that up. Have you seen the movie? It is very good.

Gotya, okay. I took a screenshot of a couple of example categories now and I'll loop back and search for the same thing next week and if I can show the numbers are static there, I'll file a bug. Thanks! If you have any existing screenshots, feel free to send them over, too - every little example helps the engs to get to the bottom of problems like that :)

No worries, Chris - I take your word for it that it's happening; I just need to be able to show examples to the engineers. I'll gather that info - thanks for reporting it!

No I am not an admin but I have noticed this behaviour too. Proceed to ask Anna about it as she is the one for this sort of stuff :)

Yeah, thanks Chris - persistent fellow, I'm afraid! Admins have been blocking the different IPs, but he's been returning under ones. I reckon it's someone who wasn't happy about having his edit rolled back when they included spammy linking against the community's guidelines. Shame! Hopefully they find a site that suites their needs and preferences better. Sorry for the messages in the meantime!

I'll go ahead and delete the page now and you can republish under your other name. Cheers Chris!

Chris,
Your word is enough. I will remove the nfd tag and you need do nothing else.
Sometimes, when an article looks "off," I will delve into the history, see that an article is older, look more closely at the size of the article in bytes (through time), and notice additions and deletions by unfamiliar editors. Doing this sometimes allows me to fix vandalism.
