Lyon (Lyons in English) is a city in the southeast of France. Today it is the second largest metropolis, or metro area in France (Paris is the largest). In 2012, about 500,000 people lived in Lyon, about 2,300,000 in the urban area.
In ancient history, the name of Lyon was Lugdunum. Someone who lives in Lyon is called a Lyonnais (male) or a Lyonnaise (female) in French.
Lyon is between the Rhone and the Saône. It is about 150 kilometres (93 mi) west of the Italian border.
