The Wikimedia engineering team builds, improves and maintains the technical infrastructure of Wikimedia sites (software and hardware), by supporting and complementing volunteer efforts. It's composed, among others, by engineering and product development staff employed by the Wikimedia Foundation and by other organizations in the Wikimedia movement.

Latest report Major news in November include: the release of the second version of the Content Translation tool, which heavily relies on Apertium for machine translation; updates to MediaWiki's internationalization based on new CLDR data; the move from Bugzilla to Phabricator as the new collaboration platform for the Wikimedia technical community. Read more Featured activity Wikimedia Apps Wikimedia Mobile Applications for iOS, Android, and new platforms Status: (2014-10-monthly) In October, following on from the successful launch of Nearby on iOS in September, the Wikimedia Apps team released Nearby on Android as well. Nearby allows you to see articles about things that are near you, and read their articles to learn more about them. The team also released features that roll up disambiguation and page issues into a button underneath the page title, so that the content of the article is brought closer to the top of the article. We also released a refactor of the technical architecture of the app to bring the app closer to compliance with Google's standards for Android apps, which also brought a few minor UX improvements. On the iOS side, a bug fix build was released which improved the UI scaling on iPads, fixed a few minor issues with the table of contents, and fixed miscellaneous crashes. At the end of the month, a build was submitted to Apple which reworked the way the app retrieves information from the servers, which should increase the stability of the app and reduce crashes. Changes this week The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since March 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from March 24. It will be on all Wikipedias from March 25 (calendar). The text of a reference is now more visible when you click on it. It has a blue background. Many wikis already have the blue color. Those wikis can now remove it from their CSS page. [1] VisualEditor is now much faster. For many users it is now at least as fast as the wikitext editor. [2] [3] [4] When you add a list of references in VisualEditor, you now see it right away. You can still change its group by editing it.
