It never fails to amaze how normalised censorship is in China. Every censor cited in this story studied journalism or comms degrees. As one formerly jailed Weibo user put it: it's become "normal to know things and also understand that they can’t be shared”

It also means that there's a great role now open in the Beijing bureau for a new tech companies reporter - it's a fascinating beat, jam-packed with all the jailed execs, hipster propaganda apps and creepy robots you could ever want:

Personal news! After 2.5+ years covering China tech companies, I'm moving to a new gig covering general news with a special focus on the intersection between tech policy & society. Very excited that this new role exists, (and that I get to keep my old office chair).

We also have 'Happy Harold' - a giraffe puppet that travels Australia in a windowless van with a amputee mannequin named 'Pam' teaching school kids about drugs.

One not-so-well-known 90s Australia quirk: bedtime mascots. At 7pm, depending on which channel you watch, a white lady and a nightmare-inducing giant possum or dog would come on TV and tell you to go to bed.

There's also an ominous congruity between the two stories' kicker quotes... "We will continue to work," Sheng said, "until it’s impossible." "It made me realize that there will always be good things that happen in life as long as you are alive.”

And this story on the cautious optimism of a Chinese podcaster inspired by 'This American Life', telling warm and harrowing human stories in a media-scape dominated by propaganda (+ one of my favorite podcasts!)

While this is govt-directed discrimination, it’s also a great example of how - when pressed - US tech companies ultimately kowtow to restrictions on human freedom in China, and in doing so, give credibility to those restrictions.

I can verify this - I was looking for a place in west Sichuan recently, I asked at least 3 whether it was ok for a foreigner to book the listing, they said it’s fine, as long as I’m not Tibetan or Uyghur - oddly, two of the places were run by Tibetans.
