    The government knowingly grew the backlog in the Crown Courts by selling off the courts. To fix it, they now suggest restricting jury trials and forcing legal professionals to work evenings & weekends for free. They built a Nightingale Hospital in 9 days. Build. More. Courts.

    Just had a panic that Scooch were on Twitter and would get snitch-tagged in this thread and I’d have to spend all day apologising and explaining that I did actually find them jolly good fun and no it’s probably not fair to compare them to Liam Fox. But I don’t think they are.

    An important topic. My two cents: criminal justice is a public function. The existence of private prosecutors distorts that vital premise, and increases the risk of partisan or botched prosecutions, and therefore miscarriages of justice.

    We are now taking evidence on private prosecutions. On our first panel we are questioning forensic accountants who investigated the Post Office: -Ron Warmington, Managing Director, Second Sight -Ian Henderson, Director, Second Sight 📺

    THREAD: Six weeks until I embark on a new career away from criminal legal aid, and law altogether. I grafted from 16 years old to be a criminal lawyer (only 5 years ago 😉 jk: more like 15+). I might have been tempted to stick around a bit longer but like many I’ve been (1/6)

    If you want to know why lawyers are (a) not fooled by and (b) furious at the use of the inverted language of 'flexible operating hours', here is a thread to explain exactly what they should mean, and exactly what they don't.

    We are instinctively cross about anything called “flexible” hours because - they won’t be. We instinctively *know* we will bear the brunt of them. We know we are cleaning up someone else’s mess. But imagine if they *could* be. Imagine if they could work for us. A thread👇🏼👇🏼

    In Mississipi a convicted prisoner is given a record of everything said at his trial. In England and Wales he has to pay for a transcript, which costs £1.13 (plus VAT) per 72 words.
