    Sad to see the passing of Fran Allen, who did lots of great foundational work in the field of compilers (and was the first female winner of the Turing Award). I didn't know her personally, but I've heard she was a wonderful mentor to many computer scientists over the years.

    Fran Allen, the first woman to receive the and 's first female Fellow, passed away yesterday on her 88th birthday. Allen made pioneering contributions to computing, and was a dedicated mentor and champion for women in technology:
