    This is a really important thread. One thing I'd add is that Facebook and the like utilize their own interpretation of US terrorism statutes and apply them to the entire world's discourse. This is problematic AF.

    Reading FB's latest updates to its dangerous orgs policy, I felt a familiar crankiness about applying statutory analysis to a policy that could be bent or broken at will. I kept thinking: how long until we hear about some secret exception or special circumstance. WELL...

    I remember a Facebook policy staffer telling me around 2015 that it was not in the best interest of users to be transparent about things like that.

    This is a good thread, and I would add that Facebook is very much aware of the fact that governments circumvent proper reporting channels and instead rely on content guidelines, and has actively chosen to disagree with civil society recommendations on that point for many years.

    There is ... a lot in this decision and its recommendations that go far beyond the individual case. The Board continues to push for systemic change despite its limited remit (and steps up to provide the more specific guidance it didn't in the Trump case). A few notes...

    I'm so incredibly saddened to hear of Sherwin Siy's passing. I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, but we worked together on a few things in the past couple of years, and he struck me as such a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul.

    A slight pet peeve here: Liberals saying "lol private companies can't do censorship" may be correct from a legal standpoint. But politically it's a tone-deaf stance. Trump's lawsuit may be dumb but dismissing corporate power over speech is misguided.

    In addition to my general excitement about reading this, just seeing these excerpts is INCREDIBLY validating, as I heard very similar things in writing my own book (with far less access than these two superstars!)

    This is something that should trouble anyone deeply, and I agree; people are pretty nonchalant about it.

    Democrats have literally written letters to platforms naming individual accounts they should take down where the speech is protected speech and it strikes me as short-sighted that people don't care more about this...
