    One reason I thought the Patriots would stick with Cam Newton for Week 1...the Dolphins defensive coaches are from New England and know that offensive system as well as any opponent. Speaks to how much trust Bill Belichick has in Mac Jones.

    As for Mac Jones, I did not think that Bill Belichick would start a rookie Wk 1. But Mac has not looked like a rookie. Movement in the pocket, dead accurate ball placement, he’s been phenomenal. Since March I’ve said he is the most NFL-ready rookie QB, glad he can now prove it.

    I am floored by the Cam Newton news. I thought it was likely the Patriots would start him, but with a short leash. Worst-case, he would be the backup. Never thought they would flat-out release him.
