I'd like to think Vincent himself would have loved this action and cheered on the activists. It was punk, full of life, and in tune with this vibrantly beautiful Earth, just like he was. There is no art on a dead planet.

It’s frustrating we can’t read the journal-recruited peer reviews for this article. But helpful and interesting peer comments via the Science Media Centre add context: sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reactio

But I think this research is helpful support for thinking about depression as a reaction to systemic issues rather than something medically wrong with the person experiencing it.

SSRIs are drugs that help you to get more out of the serotonin you do have and are frequently prescribed for depression.
I don’t think this research is saying “don’t use these drugs”
A personal anecdote: they’ve helped me out of the ditch before.

Surprised to read today that there is little/no evidence that lack of serotonin signalling causes depression.

Very important point they're making. Let's also not forget that our protest rights have been reduced since UK govt introduced the new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act (the Policing Act) (April 2022) libertyhumanrights.org.uk/advice_informa

@paulpowlesland was spoken to by the police for holding a blank banner in Parliament Square and told if he had written on it ?not my king’ he would’ve been arrested.
Are arrests appropriate for people protesting the monarchy?

I believe in sharing work, power and access between many people, and reducing our individual workloads. I think it's good for individual health as well as community power.
It's fantastic to see a story about someone who has done this with their lab:

As Ayisha notes, it's not enough for the size of the disaster or our culpability in climate change. We need wholesale change.

I still don’t think people understand what it means for 33 million people to be displaced. That’s 6 times more people than those internally displaced in Ukraine from war, that’s roughly 90% of the population of Canada.
That’s how many people are internally homeless right now

Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing this useful and interesting perspective on the lessons learned through experiencing work life outside of academia.
I recommend this for anyone who's only worked in academia and is worried about trying something different:

Yesterday was my last day of working at Google. Perhaps this comes as surprise to you twitter folks, as I haven't widely announced that I left academia to try something new. Here's what I learned in 9 months as a Data Analyst who (temporarily) left Astronomy for Big Tech. 1/n

Interesting news about ? milk!
Also a good example about how we (collectively) only “know” what we think we have understood through science so far, and we update that knowledge as more evidence comes out. That doesn’t make science weak, it makes it strong!

MILK TIME
! Have you ever considered that it’s a bit weird that you drink the milk of another animal, and it’s totally normal? Milk is a billion-dollar industry.
A *HUGE* new human evolution paper just dropped, upending one of the great modern evolutionary ideas.

Gene editing is like a clean cut and paste job. Farmers have been doing it for centuries by breeding and selecting for certain qualities (tall or short wheat! orange instead of purple carrots!) - this editing method is faster and more specific.
