Objectives:
Best practices for prevention of diabetes are known but not fully implemented in community settings of developing countries. Venezuela has a high prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease and is undergoing profound socio-economic changes that may increase the burden of these diseases.
We propose using feasible and cost-effective peer-led interventions, enhanced by a telehealth social network, to further expand the successful pilot experience of Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) implementation in Maracaibo, Venezuela. These interventions, implemented in a culturally-sensitive way are expected to have multiplicative effects in the community and public health settings in Venezuela and other Latin American countries.
