As for the screenplay, by Linda Woolverton, it treads carefully, and all too kindly, in the footsteps of "Wicked" ...
Richard Roeper
'Maleficent' is an admittedly great-looking, sometimes creepy.
Christopher Orr
As a cameo, Jolie's performance might have proven spectacular; but as a protagonist, she doesn't give us enough to hold onto. For all her efforts, she remains yet another special effect, however spectacular.
Michael Sragow
All would be forgiven if the film had more magical feeling.
Peter Rainer
At least Disney was smart enough to cast Jolie. She has a genuinely heroic presence. If only the movie were equal to it.
Andrew O'Hehir
Whatever its flaws, "Maleficent" is a family-friendly Disney adventure that offers a relaunched and thoroughly delightful Angelina Jolie ...

It hardly matters that Jolie's accent rambles a bit between pungent Cockney and plummy Buckingham Palace.

Stick to disney.. Although this should have made for a great movie, with a variety of veteran actors, I did not like this movie. It was cheesy with the romance and Angelina Jolie played a confusing villain who felt a mix of affection and hatred towards sleeping beauty. The special effects were good, but ultimately I don't think this movie is deserving of any oscars.

Mal-awesome A view from the other side of the story of a villian really cleared up a lot. Showing how Maleficent became what she became then change for the better was cool. Angelina played the part perfectly. I felt like Disney could have chosen a better member to play king but that's just me. All in all great movie.

It was amazing and I love the original. I've read some of the comments from people and they have it all wrong. 1st I believe the message was that in fairy tails it doesn't always have to be a prince in white horse for it to be true love. A parents love is true. And Malificent tried to fix her wrong and by the way for the guy who said sleeping beauty was asleep for like 2 seconds. It's call Malificent it's about her. And she fixed her wrong because she realized her mistake.
Watchable, sometimes even enjoyable, but lacking the trademark magic of a Disney fairy tale It's true when they say Ms. Jolie is the diamond in the rough regarding this film, for her performance makes it worthwhile. However, for the film to even work they had to drastically reverse the personalities of almost all of the major characters in the original film. Frankly, it came across at times as being somewhat insulting to the classical Disney story. I just do not understand why they felt the need to demonize Stefan and transform the true heroes of the original, the fairies, into incompetent fools.
Terrible First I would have loved to c a remake of the classic sleeping beauty but that just wasn't what I got. Some stories should remain true to the original but this was just garbage to make the lead villain into a misunderstood person was such a drastic change y can't some people just be evil instead of having a terrible back story that's suppose to justify her change. I loved the original story and would have rather paid to c that instead of this lack luster film. Don't waste your money.

Angie... It's true. This movie on the whole is really nothing special. Nice special effects bit nothing mind blowing. Decent acting that's overdone at times, painfully vacuous at others. Weird script that jumps around too much, and some plot twists that are as questionable as they are interesting. But...Jolie is worth watching this for at least once. Her performance strikes the perfect balance of sinister and serene, tortured and insightful, gentle and destructive. She absolutely owns this movie and single handedly takes it from being extremely meh to decidedly enjoyable.
Not another Wicked but an edgier Frozen Most of the people disappointed with the film were victims of false advertising. This is not in fact the origin tale of Maleficent, or a prologue to Sleeping Beauty. It's a rewrite where she's the hero. You might have a bitter taste of the big changes to some your beloved characters, but if you look past that, you'll find an enjoyable tale about a character who sought revenge and then has a change of heart before it's too late. Maleficent may not be the greatest Disney villain we all know and love here, but she is still such a treat to watch as the antihero here. I'll avoid spoilers, but let's just say if you watched Frozen, you might walk into some familiar territory, one being the obvious rewrite of the original villain. Unlike Elsa though, Maleficent will have her time to shine, however brief, as the baddie you remember. Angelina Jolie is perfect as Maleficent in both her light and dark moments My only flaws are the Narrator (used too often [show don't tell?] and tries to pass this off as a reboot) and the abrupt ending that misses some opportunities for character interactions post-conflict. But said conflict so awesome that you might just forgive that last one.

Amazing job Disney has always had a happy feeling to it with upbeat music and a bright color pallet, but with Maleficent Disney gives us a glimpse of their darker side. This movie has an amazing storyline and Angelina did an outstanding job acting as Maleficent. It was somewhat of a predictable storyline. I like the twist they added as well. With this I must come to a close saying this is overall an amazing movie. I would recommend this movie to both a young and older audience.

Absolutely Horrid Here it is, the much anticipated film starring everyone's favourite Disney villain. Make no mistake, this movie is god awful. A bullshit retcon of the classic, filled with terrible clichés, performances, plot, and horrid CG, this movie is everything wrong with the Hollywood Adaptation Mindset of today. Making something Darker and Edgier™ doesn't make it good. Just watch Sleeping Beauty instead of this trash.

Provocative, gorgeous, and fantastic The original sleeping beauty had some plot holes which I never understood. I always felt if I were Maleficent I would not have let the Hero go to Arora, resulting in break the spell. This movie a retelling fairy tale of the most powerful fairy, Maleficent, showed her mischief, misfortune, love, hate, a whole spectrum of human emotions. Shown how incredibly human she is for a non humanoid. In the end, we get redemption, redefinition, and rebirth of a legend.
Loved the original Everyone loves a backstory especially for villains. You see why they're broken. The actors were great and the story would have been enjoyable if it wasn't rewriting a Disney classic. Disney turns a villain into an anti hero of sorts. She looks evil but she isn't she's just betrayed. The repercussions now are instead of little girls dressing up like Scottish princess warriors at Disney land they'll be wearing horns on their heads calling themselves heroes who can do something horrible and get away with it.

Magnificent is Maleficent Im a little late to see this work but it holds all the mystery, beauty and drama that you would expect from a Disney Classic. Although the characters were not as developed, I feel that by contouring the story in this new Arc allows us to see parts of a story that goes beyond the originals clear cut idea of Good and Evil and Broadens the line between that dichotomy to reveal a more fulfilling and worthwhile story line. A story line filled with wonder and human spirit; that is the love, hatred, greed, and selflessness that exists in all creatures with heart and all people no matter their differences. And although it is too clean an ending, all is at peace because each character came to the end of the road they were on on their own accord. No real villains just people who all fell victim to their circumstances and their own emotions. Some lived while others had to die.

Once again: you will get what you're expecting here. I keep harping on the fact that you probably know what you're going to get from a film experience like this one: a love story, loads of magical fireworks, some cool battles, and cheekbones. Lots of cheekbones. If I had the power to re-cast a character, it would be switching Noomi Rapace with Jolie. But I know; Jolie = $$. So let her do the cheekbone thing when they could have had a bravura, multi-faceted performance from my beloved Noomi. Anyway, enjoy this if you like fantasy films. It's fun. And if we stop watching these large budget fantasy flicks, they'll stop making them! And it wasn't bad. It's as Eddie Izzard would say: "popcorn-eatin' fun!"

Disney's FU to fans of the original A decent re-telling of Sleeping Beauty, to bad they kept referencing Disney's first version. I could have lived with it just being a mediocre version, until the end where they basically told fans of the original f*ck you. So much potential, and they screwed it up. So many missed moments at a nice twist or character development, just to fall flat. And it started with the neutering of the title character. At least they did a good job on the "true love's kiss" part, which is the only reason I didn't hate it.
Maleficent is the best movie in the whole universe :D well I saw it with my mom and my brother. My brother really liked it he was like oh my gosh I just love this movie so much. I love this movie it's the best. I like it when Maleficent says to the little girl beast when she was a little kid. It's hilarious. I just love this movie so much. I enjoy watching it, I really like the ending of the movie it was pretty nice thank you directors for doing an amazing movie love Maria :-D :-D
I truly love this movie <3 This movie is absolutely extraordinary beautiful special effects wonderful characters Angelina Jolie is awesome in this movie she rocked it! You got the perfect person to play maleficent. It has its twists and turns but overall its a love story not your average sleeping beauty like people was saying not at all but its better than that to me . I can watch it over and over again and probably won't get sick of it that easily. Great job Disney!!! You did it again!!

Critics know nothing Mixed reviews? Please. This is one of the best modern Disney films that is based on a classic. The way it gives Maleficent's perspective shows that no one's really "born evil" - it takes some twists from the original Disney Sleeping Beauty plot, but the outcome is much better for it in my opinion. Also Angelina Jolie is perfect as Maleficent.

Extraordinary My daughter at first was so scared and told me me that she will close her eyes in the entire movie. But when it began, she was astounded by how beautiful the story and how the cast delivered it well. There were a lot of twists but who cares with all that as long as the twists are not absurd and out of the storyline. We were delighted of the outcome of the movie. Kudos to the cast and the people behind the movie. How about "A Little Mermaid" for the next disney princess? She does not have a movie like this.

Undeniably beautiful production Unfortunately let down by a one dimensional retelling that does a disservice to its intention of tackling the difficult subject of rape and betrayal. No one other than Jolie is worth watching and the pacing is a slog. Worth a rent for your own opinion but keep expectations low.
