    So many nights, my educator parents stayed up late to prepare lessons. They bought supplies with their own money and worked long hours to help students catch up. Teachers are the engine of possibility in American life and we at Smithsonian are honored to serve and support them.

    In May 1847, "a day of public rejoicing" followed the laying of the cornerstone of the Smithsonian Castle. It was an honor as the 14th Secretary to join friends and colleagues, such as Under Secretary for Museums and Culture Kevin Gover, to reenact this moment.

    Norman Mineta was a 10-year-old in California when his family was forced into a Wyoming incarceration camp. Later as a Congressman, Mineta was integral in securing an official apology for the incarceration of Japanese Americans in the years following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

    This Qur’an in the collection of our is from the Safavid period. Join the museum on May 7 for an outdoor afternoon of music, food, and art to celebrate Eid al-Fitr and mark the end of Ramadan.

    When one of my daughters attended and made childhood visits to the Peacock Room, I was lucky to experience it anew through her eyes. She was taken with Whistler's butterfly-style signature and began to sign her own artwork with a ladybug.

    As a college student in D.C., I often found peace and relief in 's Peacock Room, a dining room created by James McNeill Whistler to house a collection of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. Its beauty brings art of different origins together in sumptuous harmony.
