This building, like the Smithsonian, reflects both the wonders and the reality of American life. While it's unclear what role enslaved people played in its construction, we know D.C. would look markedly different today were it not for Black labor.

While the medieval revival red sandstone building seemed out of place as it rose on some of Washington's most revered land, it cemented this place as a site of learning and possibility. Our commitment to the people of the world continues to be strong 175 years later.

In May 1847, "a day of public rejoicing" followed the laying of the cornerstone of the Smithsonian Castle. It was an honor as the 14th Secretary to join friends and colleagues, such as Under Secretary for Museums and Culture Kevin Gover, to reenact this moment.
