    🔍 Zoom in on Bisa Butler's life-sized portrait quilt of members of the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the Harlem Hellfighters, a segregated unit of the U.S. military in World War I. Butler layers fabric to bring to life a 1919 black and white photo of the group.

    One of those telescopes was the Submillimeter Array, located near the summit of Maunakea in Hawai’i, where its lofty position provides a view virtually unclouded by water vapor. It is a joint project of and Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

    This morning, our and collaborators around the globe offer us a clearer glimpse of our universe. To capture this image of the black hole at the heart of the Milky Way, eight telescopes in many locations had to work together to create an Earth-sized telescope.

    On a black background, a donut-shaped orange blob appears to glow in colors ranging from white to orange to dark red. It’s not perfectly circular all around, with three main blobs visible.
    This is the first-ever image of the black hole at the heart of our galaxy. At 27,000 light-years away, Sagittarius A* would look from Earth to be the size of a donut on the Moon. A global network of telescopes and 300 researchers, many from , captured this image.

    This vivid dress from was designed by Carolina Herrera. Raised in Caracas, Venezuela, she was inspired by fashion shows and European travel. She moved to New York City in 1980 and launched her brand, known for its sophistication and elegance, a year later.

    Congratulations to the graduating class of 2022. It was an honor to speak at the commencement. As a college student, I believed that after graduation the clouds would part. My future would be clear ahead. I was wrong. Life unfolds in ways you can’t conceive of.

    Past and present, mothers prepare the next generation despite the unfairness they have faced. This important program on May 10 at our explores history-changing mothers and includes a panel on Black maternal health.

    So many nights, my educator parents stayed up late to prepare lessons. They bought supplies with their own money and worked long hours to help students catch up. Teachers are the engine of possibility in American life and we at Smithsonian are honored to serve and support them.
